This past Memorial Day I had the oppurtunity to run the 2014 Bolder Boulder. This is America's largest 10K with over 50,000 runners.

If you love running or fitness or just great events make sure to run the Bolder Boulder in Boulder, Colorado at least once in your life. There are runners and walkers of all skill levels.
It's a great time. The city of Boulder really gets behind the event along. While running you'll see many bands, belly dancers, guys running in tu tus, keg stands, and tons of neighborhood people with garden hoses there to spray you off as you run by.

This year the weather was great. About 78 degrees and a little humid.
My goal was to hit about 1 hour on my time but I came in about 20 minutes behind that. But I had a great time and I urge you to check it out if you have never been to the Bolder Boulder.

Good luck and Happy Running!

I'm lucky to have found the Brooks Ghost 4's. They make a huge difference.

I guess I have weird feet because it is really tough to find a pair of shoes that fit me right. Especially for running.

A couple of weeks ago I decided to go down to Runners Roost in Lone Tree Colorado and actually get fitted for some good running shoes. I got my mileage up to close to 40 miles per week and I dropped close to 30 lbs so I thought this would be a good time to get some good shoes.

I looked at Asics, Nike, and Mizunos. This is where getting fitted for the proper shoes makes a big difference. I was going to go with a pair of Mizuno Wave Runner shoes because I though they looked the coolest. I found out they were not right for my running style. I needed a medium stability shoe and the Brooks Ghost 4 were the correct pair. Running on the treadmill at Runners Roost proved that.

What are some of the shoes you guys suggest? I'd love to hear your opinions here.

Good luck and Happy Running!Doc In The Rockhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16872268715088515894noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3876736762817866156.post-46070161976558697862011-06-13T08:20:00.000-07:002011-06-13T08:33:51.310-07:00Haven't posted in a long time. It's been two years since my last post.

Just wanted to let everyone know that my weight is finally starting to come off. I'm running and walking about 5 to 7 miles a day right now.

The main thing I want to do is tell you is "Don't give up!" when you are trying to get your weight off. I've weighed as much as 258 lbs and now I'm down to the 220's or low 230's. Still want to get down to about 185 which is good for me.

The one thing I did that really helped me this past month is limit the amount of food I was eating. I'm at about 1,000 calories per day of very healthy and vitamin rich food. Also, no processed food and very light on dairy and meat.

I gave up my once or twice daily Starbucks iced vanilla latte. After a week it wasn't hard, plus I have more money now. $10 per day on Starbucks in stupid. I make my own coffee now.

Also, I keep a food journal every day to track what I eat and I just keep track of the calories. No need to do something stupid like weight watchers points or join some stupid weight loss center for $500.

If you are having trouble losing weight I'd love to help you. I spent 10 years as a pretty large man. It feels much much better to be healthy and not fat.Doc In The Rockhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16872268715088515894noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3876736762817866156.post-91138214001382889702010-01-31T12:38:00.000-08:002010-01-31T12:42:30.004-08:00New Day and New Shoe - Under Armour<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 165px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhZQnpgM0jY4Y8HsGsWdyWPV_iseqBaau9ncBKe4utoMsOJ4bfiStMTVLqMNMjAS6tku-XEgtv__JPuGARCXXz2jgb3L0qWCuFq7sEQC1F6RhZcVzYXk3Utv4Gc0N0V7Akbu7tgWr-Ca_v6/s320/Men's-Revenant-2-thumb.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5433006891744774882" />
Just finished my first week of training by doing 3 miles yesterday.
Picked up some new Under Armour running shoes.

I picked up the men's Revenant running shoes. Only 263 days. This is my longest run of the week. I need to do 3 miles on the treadmill at the rec center. That will take me about 45 minutes to an hour.

I'm looking for something motivating today but I'm stuck right now. The best I can do is Brett Favre. The Vikings, my favorite team of any sport, signed Brett Favre who turned 40 years old this season. Most people thought he could not make it through an entire NFL season at 40. He proved the critics wrong by leading the Minnesota Vikings to the NFC Championship Game and missed the Super Bowl by one play. The Vikings lost in overtime 31 - 28 to the Saints.

I know the older we get the easier it is to give up on things we used to love to do, like running. But when you give up on the stuff you love a part of you dies. Keep the faith and keep running, playing golf, playing softball, or do whatever you love to do. Life is to short to quit.Doc In The Rockhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16872268715088515894noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3876736762817866156.post-3382957466295713922010-01-26T09:13:00.000-08:002010-01-27T08:24:47.701-08:00Day 2 Running Schedule - Marathon Month's Away<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj-KQwdS8du1P8bAKNFF50QDGEI8VLYSRKMXT-vklEBWHNHyCoveTEQvMkJ-N5NhwXpN5ZhgqW4yk20nJfSCGExrfvtkflBIA_ytIccD-LJAFakez9SYi8m_KBNRvbBzE_pHTMBTg950WR8/s320/pre'srock.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5431100908207337618" />
Nice day in Colorado. About 30 degrees at the end of January in Colorado. I have 1.5 miles scheduled at the rec center tonight at 4:40 p.m. Should take me about a half hour.

I know that's extremely slow but I'm still a pretty big guy. Hopefully 6 months from now I'll be able to crank it out in less than 20 minutes.

Steve Prefontaine is still a popular U.S. running figure. I saw a movie about him a few years ago and it was great. I know he ran at Oregon in the early 70's and Nike still sells stuff with his name on it. Here's his rock or maybe it's his headstone.

According to Wikipedia he was born and raised in Coos Bay, Oregon, Prefontaine was primarily a long-distance runner who once held the American record in the seven distance track events from the 2000 meters to the 10,000 meters.[1] Prefontaine died at the age of 24 in a car accident. In the prime of his life.

The Eugene Register-Guard called his death "the end of an era". By the time of his death, Prefontaine was a popular athlete who, along with Frank Shorter and Bill Bowerman, was credited with sparking the running boom of the 1970s. His life story has been detailed in two films, 1997's Prefontaine and 1998's Without Limits, as well as the documentary "Fire on the Track". An annual track event, the Pre Classic, has been held in his honor since 1975.

Over his career, he won 120 of the 153 races he ran (78 percent). Prefontaine liked to say, "To give anything less than your best is to sacrifice the Gift."

Pre's Rock is a memorial at the site of the roadside boulder where Prefontaine died. Many runners inspired by Prefontaine leave behind memorabilia to honor his memory and continued influence, such as race numbers, medals, and running shoes. Pre's Rock was dedicated in December 1997 and is maintained by Eugene Parks and Recreation as Prefontaine Memorial Park.[4] The rock is just across the Willamette River from the east end of Pre's Trail. The memorial features a plaque with a picture of Prefontaine that reads:

“ For your dedication and loyalty
To your principles and beliefs...
For your love, warmth, and friendship
For your family and friends...
You are missed by so many
And you will never be forgotten... ”

The Prefontaine Memorial, featuring a relief of his face, records, and date of birth, is located at the Coos Bay Visitor Center in Coos Bay. In 2008, ten memorial plaques were laid along the Prefontaine Memorial Race route, the former training grounds of Prefontaine. The plaques bear an image of Prefontaine from his high school year book and various quotes and records from his time in Coos Bay. The plaques were part of a grant from the Oregon Tourism Commission, the Coos Bay-North Bend Visitor & Convention Bureau, and the Prefontaine Memorial Committee.

Each year on the third Saturday of September in Coos Bay, over 1000 runners engage in the Prefontaine Memorial Run, a 10k run honoring his accomplishments.[5]Doc In The Rockhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16872268715088515894noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3876736762817866156.post-30352568264079406232010-01-25T12:09:00.000-08:002010-01-25T12:13:32.120-08:00Week Training for October 2010 Marathon<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 250px; height: 119px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiHIBY5RCyF4Xup_KrldDYJ62xitDlI533RvWWDUV4209UgyLG_kbtvCcsxnwLPo-ALTdPCeuq0AvuWZqdiIGywmqjH_vUMQCTBrg8AEqf4bTH7UcG_zS2aRS8C76W9AjYC_E_eKS-uIsLa/s320/denver_rocknroll.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5430772401944673810" />
We're starting this week on January 25th, 2010 as week one. It's an American classic.

How many times in our life do you just feel like quitting your job, your school, your life and just go out and do something really crazy like running across the United States.

I remember being awake while my doctor was getting skin cancer (malignant melanoma) off of my leg 7 years ago. The only thing I could think about was how much I wish I could have been out running at that moment.

For a period in my life, one of my favorite things to do was run. I ran 3 to 5 miles a day every day. Rain, snow or shine. Somehow life beat me up and I lost the passion to run. I've run some road races and a half marathon over the years. But it hasn't felt easy to run for me for over 10 years.

A huge part of the problem is my weight. I used to weigh about 165 to 175 19 years ago. Right now my weight fluctuates between 240 and 260. So for the rest of the year I'm committing to "Run Forest Run"! Hopefully you'll join the run.

DarinDoc In The Rockhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16872268715088515894noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3876736762817866156.post-62827477266620570562009-10-09T09:32:00.000-07:002009-10-09T09:41:55.522-07:00Training For Your First Marathon<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 212px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgUDBjTZexgH9qa0895Y5KPNDSV26J9_57gYn37L7NIu7-romTQTFttpP1vTpt4kOp4xYzcchucXlUKn3O68EpjNuQI2bRWfZySP44mplZ4fOp6rhNSlfsj4K3V9EilwIKfS9PphO78_z-v/s320/keithinGrandmas.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5390641370187336306" />
My cousin Keith Pearson ran his first marathon this year. I'm extremely proud of him.

Keith and I used to be on the same 2 mile relay team in high school. We had one of the better 2 mile relays in South Dakota in the early 80's. I believe we got third at the state track meet my junion year of high school.

Keith recently sent me a photo of himself running the 2009 Grandmas Marathon in Duluth, Minnesota. Here's "Proof" that he ran.

I know he trained by running a half marathon a couple of months prior in Omaha. I'd still like to run a marathon. Hopefully I can drop enough weight to make this possible.

If you still haven't given up on training for your first Marathon. But this show has run it's course. Time for NBC to pull the plug on this info-mercial for weight loss.
I'll tell you how bad this show has gotten.

Last night we got to see the contestants in a dark room with nightvision. Try to see who was going to be the first one to fudge on their diet by eating Reese's Peanut Butter Cups or doughnuts. OMG! Is NBC that desperate for programming that this is now what is on national TV during prime time.

I guess there are a lot of fat people in America that like to sit around and watch other fat people. This is supposed to be an inspirational show? I write this as a person who needs to lose weight. I think this show makes fun of fat people and is not inspirational at all.

If you're hoooked on that terrible show "The Biggest Loser". Do yourself a favor. Instead of sitting on your butt for 2 hours on Tuesday night watching that show. Workout for those two hours.Doc In The Rockhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16872268715088515894noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3876736762817866156.post-80036296980032537222008-09-12T08:05:00.000-07:002008-09-12T08:12:13.733-07:00Hypnosis and Weight Loss with Running<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiY9FZS351iS7P8FbCDUm-I0RMGBMiEVSqDRHJWdNabDw5-8D25j9CTseeSZQsjidWUwyxcLsK9WwhGWq-X1_eD4hNOjXHvRS_JTs1mrK1W03ftVuN9gYT8bl05_DcHWta96yJHSiKoOS2D/s320/hypnosis.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5245151449425628690" />

Well, I decided to get a little more serious with my weight loss this week. I decided to break down and download a weight loss audio book from Dr. Rick Collingwood off of iTunes.

It says to listen to the hypnosis session when you go to sleep at night 6 days a week for 30 days. I'm 2 nights into it and I really feel better. Yesterday I bet I ate half of what I normally eat and I wasn't even hungry. Plus I had tons of energy. What that means one day when you workout do all exercises that involve pushing. The next day do exercises that involve pulling. It's also good to alternate muscle groups. I have a BowFlex XLT.

Here is an average push day.

Bench Press: Done with extra cable laying on back
110 lbs on the rods to start 3 sets of 10, 8, 6, 4
Then go to 210 lbs 3 sets 10, 8, 6, 4 (This is the max my machine will go, I'm ordering another 100 lbs of rods when I get the chance.

One Arm Push: Done with hand straps
110 lbs on power rods 3 sets of 10, 8, 6, 4
Repeat with opposite arm

Leg Press: Done with weight belt attachment
210 lbs on power rods 3 sets of 10, 8, 6, 4
Repeat

Average Pull Day.

Pulldown: Done with overhead bar.
110lbs on the power rods to start. 3 sets of 10, 8, 6, 4.
Max weight at 210 llbs, 3 sets of 10, 8, 6, 4.

Bicep Curl: Done with hand straps
110 lbs on power rods 3 sets of 10, 8, 6, 4.
Repeat with opposite arm.

Stomach Curl: Lay on bench add extra cable
Do situp with weight 210 lbs 10, 8, 6, 4.
Repeat.

This is my curent workout routine and I'm having a lot of fun with it.
After 6 weeks I will mix it up. Still fat?

Last fall and winter I was fascinated with the NBC TV show "The Biggest Loser". If you're not familiar with the show. They take fatties like me and have them lose a tremendous amount of weight over a short amount of time.

If you've ever tried to lose weight, most of you know how hard it is. I was in Weight Watchers a couple of times and if you lost 2 lbs a week after the first couple of weeks you were doing handstands. These people on the Biggest Loser were dropping 10 to 20 lbs a week. Which is just crazy. I could believe it in the first week or two. But after a period of time your body tends to adapt.

This got me thinking. Why don't they bring out people from past seasons to talk to the contestants. This show is entering it's fifth season this fall. Probably over 100 people have been on this show over 5 years. With over 100 people to choose from couldn't they find 20 people that still are slim after losing all of this weight? Supposedly 20% is considered a success with any weight loss program.

I spent a couple of days researching and I could only find one contestant that has lost the weight on the show and continued to keep it all off. Her name is Kelly Miner and this lady works out for 4 hours per day. Yikes! The guy in the above picture, Ryan Benson, gained all of his weight back.

I heard The Biggest Loser producers were trying to put together a reunion show but it fell through. Could it be that they were unable to find enough to put together a reunion show? Also why at the beginning of the 8 weeks or whatever do they weigh the men in without their shirts on. Their man boobs are flopping away and it's pretty gross. After they start losing a ton of weight they always weigh in with their shirt on. Is this to hide their scars from lipo?

Also, why don't they ever show an average contestants daily food diary and workout routine. Don't you think that would help people in the audience. Instead they have them do stupid elimination contests like run in a giant gerbil ball or so who can walk past a giant table full of pizza and cake without eating it.

Maybe the Biggest Losers are the people that get hooked on watching this show.Doc In The Rockhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16872268715088515894noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3876736762817866156.post-44498757319900577242008-08-27T11:42:00.000-07:002008-08-28T09:11:46.637-07:00Welcome to Elite Fat Runner<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiz1exFJ79W-dkcRotMAwbLcvPFpGkZIHviXI-4jtk_58UMe_qBRq81iosw0c17_motoH02tx0mwqj1-Q_xw_JONa-ltskXxFPpyeb8zBQ2RD3l24IUDqY2cp8_2O6-EsFb7Shg6BKCMCl7/s320/Runnin'+of+the+Green.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5239271971703280258" />
I would like to thank my brother Dean for helping to be the inspiration for this Blog.

Let me give you some history. Over 20 years ago like many of you, I was lean and mean. I ran in the state track meet all through high school and out of college I ran a bunch of 5K's and 10K's. About 10 years ago I developed a weight problem that crept up on me over time. I think I put on between 10 to 20 lbs per year. I blame a lot of this on a career change. I went into the IT field full time. Day after day of sitting on my butt in front of a computer was hard on my health.

Despite this I continued to run. I love running. There is nothing better that getting out on a country road and running. Well I found there is not much support for other fat runners like myself so I decided to start this site. Here you will find some humor, some weight loss tips, and maybe some motivation.

In the picture above you will see me at the 2008 Denver Running of the Green. I was one of the fatter runners there. As you can see by the caption though, I am an Elite Runner.

Have a great day!
DarinDoc In The Rockhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16872268715088515894noreply@blogger.com0
